Lopburi (Monkey City)

Lopburi (Monkey City)

Lopburi was an ancient capital in Thailand. However now it is a popular tourist site because of its Khmer style ruins and the monkeys that have taken over the city. It is known as the "Monkey City of Thailand". It is actually outside of Bangkok (2 hours by train) but is often visited for a day trip, or as somewhere to stop in between Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

There is a big market in this town (open from 6am-5pm), a nice waterfall (Wang Kan Lueang Waterfall). But the main attractions are of course the ruins and the monkeys.

Wat Nakhon Kosa are a large Hindu temple ruins. The Monkey Temple (Phra Prang Sam Yod) is the most famous of its ruins, and it is where you can find lots of monkeys. This temple is often compared to Angkor Wat. Open from 6am-6pm, and will cost you 50 baht to enter it (and 50 baht from food sellers to feed the monkeys)

How to get to Lopburi from Bangkok

Getting the train from Bangkok to Lopburi is really easy. Go to Hua Lampong Train Station (which is easy to get to from anywhere in Bangkok - it is quite central). From there you can get train tickets to Lopburi. Search online for train times to know when to turn up.

Once you get to Lopburi it is only a short walk from the train station to the city center (or a slightly longer walk if you want to see a few ruins on the way).
